Ongoing efforts enhance Caring Fields for wildlife habitat. The Caring Fields property was designated as a wildlife sanctuary by the Humane Society of the United States Wildlife Land Trust in February 2007. A portion of the property is left unmowed so that the tall grass can serve as a corridor for wildlife passing through. Wildlife habitat was created with debris from trees felled during hurricanes. A butterfly garden installed by a local Girl Scout Troop attracts many species of butterflies. Various species of wildlife (some of which are endangered or threatened) now use the Caring Fields as a corridor or temporary home, including river otters, Eastern gray foxes, indigo snakes, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, sandhill cranes, and other waterfowl.
The property also utilizes alternative energy and other features designed to protect the environment. |
